The second stage of Willis Bond's latest redevelopment is taking shape in the Capital's most vibrant precinct. The stage represents the last of the strengthened Cuba St facing retail space within the 7000sqm rejuvenation project.
The central city redevelopment includes the entire block from 106 Cuba Street down to Dixon Street, and bordered to the west by Victoria Street. Eventually the precinct will link together mixed use retail, commercial and residential buildings serviced by a central carpark.
Already in place is the new Te Auaha performing arts campus bringing 1000 students and staff to the precinct, and the refurbished former Deka building that provides premium retail spaces and is already home to Barkers Men's Clothing, Cotton On and Vodafone.
Like the first stage, 94-102 Cuba Street (former Farmers building) and two adjoining buildings, 104 and 106 Cuba Street will retain their heritage facades while the building undergoes major strengthening to add nearly 4500m2+ flexible 100% NBS retail and commercial space to the city's short supply.
The three low-rise buildings will sit within the original footprints and heights of the existing buildings, but the redevelopment will deliver a revitalised ground floor of premium retail spaces and, across the three buildings' upper floors, an exceptional two levels of large-format commercial office or retail space in the middle of Wellington's most vibrant quarter.
Important to the project has been maintaining the listed heritage facades of the former Deka and Farmers buildings, and other heritage features that are so much a part of the Cuba Street charm and personality, but ensuring they have the strength, comfort and amenity for the 21st century.
